Description

Short — one or two sentences, quotable

Wisp is an artificial life simulator where creatures evolve on their own — in worlds you and others share. Each one is born with heritable genes and its own small neural network, learns words from whoever speaks to it, and passes both on to its children.

Long — two or three paragraphs

Wisp begins with a handful of small creatures on an empty planet and no instructions. Nothing they do is scripted: every Wisp carries a neural network you can open and watch fire, and it is that net — not a behaviour tree — deciding where the creature walks, what it eats, and what it runs from. The net rewires while the creature is alive, and children inherit it synapse by synapse, occasionally gaining an association neuron their parents never had.

Speak to a colony by typing at it. Familiarity with a word builds through exposure, and past a threshold a Wisp will act on it rather than ignore it — then carry it to creatures you never spoke to, and to the generation after that. Genes work the same way: coats blend like paint rather than being copied, so siblings wear the same pattern in different handwriting, and a population under pressure drifts toward whatever its world rewards.

Zoom out and the ground becomes a globe, then a solar system, then a galaxy where every star holds worlds you can land on — some of them kept by other players. A Wisp exports as a file with its genome and its brain intact, so a creature you raised can be handed to someone else and go on living in their world.

  • A real brain, visible. A live neural network per creature, with a viewer that shows it firing and rewiring.
  • Genetics that blend. 14 heritable traits, 16 breed families, 8 coat patterns, inherited with drift rather than copied.
  • Language that spreads. Type at them. Words catch on, travel through a colony, and outlive the creature that learned them.
  • Deep time on demand. Wolfling Mode fast-forwards thousands of generations while you watch.
  • Ground to galaxy. One continuous zoom from a creature's feet to an open star map.
  • Shared worlds. Visit other players' colonies; export and trade individual creatures as files.

Monetisation permission

You are free to record, stream, and monetise video of Wisp, including the Alpha builds, without asking. Reuse of the soundtrack outside of gameplay footage needs a quick email first.

Team

Firelit Games is a very small independent studio. Wisp has been developed in the open across 197 builds, each shipped with notes describing what was wrong and why — those notes are readable in-game under Patch Notes, and are a fair record of how the thing was actually made.
